The time of year we enjoy the most, and always look forward to, is Vintage. It challenges us every year. We also enjoy bud burst, seeing the vines wake up from their winter sleep, which means summer is just around the corner. And of course we love firing up the wood oven that we have here at the winery and having pizza offs.
The best part of working out in the winery is the group of guys (and girl) we have, we are all very good mates. The mateship is very important as working long, hard hours during vintage would be hard if we didn’t get along and work together. We're also a funny bunch of people... we like to have a laugh, and at the end of the day, I think enjoying what we do helps us make better wine!
Josh Waechter ~ Winemaker (Mike's right hand man)
I Grew up on a farm in the Mallee near the River Murray, and the small town of Nildottie. During my school holidays I helped my uncle in his vineyards, and got a feel for growing grapes and it was from there that I decided I wanted to make wine. I achieved a Bachelor of Oenology from the University of Adelaide when I finished school and started my industry experience in McLaren Vale. I fell in love with the region and the wines.
I worked as a Cellar Hand and then Winemaker for Kangarilla Road for 6 years. During that time I worked a vintage in France. I became the winemaker for Gemtree in 2013, but I have been working closely with Mike Brown for about 8 years now. I really love the company philosophy of organic, biodynamic and sustainable farming.
My aim working here with Mike and Gemtree is to bring the best qualities from the fruit into the wines. I want to respect the fruit and never leave a heavy footprint on the wines so that each bottle expresses the piece of earth from which they came from. And most of all, I want to showcase the efforts that Melissa and Troy put into the vineyard.
I also love growing my own veggies in my veggie patch, cooking, fishing, playing footy, and of course... drinking good wine.
