Tasting Notes

Gemstone celebrates simplicity as something that is pure and uncomplicated. That is not to say that we think simplicity is easy, rather that it should be a great idea uncluttered by the need for explanation. The Gemstone range by Gemtree Wines delivers honest flavours at an affordable price. This range provides customers with an introduction to Gemtree's philosophy and commitment to organic wine growing. The 2014 Gemstone Merlot South Australia is bright, pippy, raspberry richness and smooth, supple textures. Wine with no need for explanation or occasion, just set another place at the table...

Colour

Ruby red with black hue.

Nose

Black plums, marshmallow, red currants, a little meaty: like a butcher's shop, with savoury notes on the back.

Food Pairings

Potato gnocchi, roast chicken and almost all lamb dishes.

Palate

A very generous wine, luscious in the mouth with lovely sweetness. The richness of the nose follows through to the palate with flavours of plums and currants dominating. One of the great characteristics of Merlot is its sweetness and this wine does not disappoint. Lovely, integrated, soft tannins create a firm back palate without being over powering. A little gem!

Winemaker's notes

The Gemstone wines all have purity and brightness, which is a reflection of the vineyards. A simple winemaking approach was taken with the Merlot. Fermented in open fermenters for 7 days with gentle pumping over and plunging until we felt the tannins were integrated. Pressed into barrels for aging for just 12 months and then bottled without filtration or fining.

Raymond Chan Wine Reviews - November 2014
Very deep, black-hued red with youthful purple hued. The nose is full with moderately deep, ripe plum fruit, infused with redcurrants, revealing oak spices and subtle herb notes. This is up-front and fruit-focussed. Medium-full bodied, firm, grainy tannins are the feature on palate, framing the sweetly ripe plum, herb and curranty fruit. The fruit fleshiness is enhanced by the low acid expression. The fruit is up-front, but the extraction and grip prevails and carries the wine to a fulsome, grainy-textured finish. This is a full, up-front, sweetly ripe, plummy and herb flavoured Merlot with a robust grip. Serve with slow-cooked game meat and casseroles over the next 3+ years. South Australian fruit fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 8 months in French oak barriques. Australian Certified Organic. 16.5+/20, 3 Stars
Tastings.com - World Value Wine Challenge - August 2014
Dark blue violet garnet color. Fruity aromas and flavours of ripe mulberries, purple Pez, and mineral notes with a lightly tannic, crisp, dry-yet-fruity medium-full body and a warming finish with woody tannins and moderate oak. Full bodied fruity Merlot with an "old world" minerality.
