Tasting Notes

Gemtree was founded when the Buttery family planted its beloved Shiraz in McLaren Vale four decades ago. The Obsidian Shiraz is a family treasure and indulgence. Obsidian is hand crafted - grapes are nurtured in the vineyard before the cream of the crop is hand selected and vinified separately. Still, only the best barrels make the cut, ensuring only 1% of our total Shiraz production makes the Obsidian grade.


Black purple.


A very complex array of both the red and black spectrum of fruits. Olive, violets, mulberry chocolate, mocha all provide the complex framework that gives the impression that this wine will be a pleasure for the palate.

Food Pairings

T-bone steak with blanched long beans, grilled sweetcorn and a mushroom sauce.


The aroma is a true reflection of the diversity of palate. At a modest 14% alcohol the entry to the mouth is graceful. Delicious, soft and mouth-filling with lighter red fruits like gogi berries and black fruit flavours like blackberry evident. The palate on the date of tasting (20th June 2015) is balanced, seamless, and displays beautifully crafted oak, acid and tannin.

Winemaker's notes

After the great 2012 vintage the pressure was on to make something comparable! I am proud to say we have delivered what our brand has been aspiring to achieve - to deliver a wine that is hand crafted, shows the typicity of our great vineyards, manipulated in a way that purity of Shiraz prevails and we all get to enjoy a truly remarkable wine. Our oak regime with this vintage was decreased, as we wanted to see Gemtree's provenance and the result is a wine a showing purity and elegance.

Made from the top 1% of Gemtree's shiraz production. Three years in French oak. No fining or filtration. All the best treatment, as the winery sees it, and then thrown to the cork wolves. It's a monumental wine in all respects, thick with fruit and oak, the power of blueberry and blackberry flavour afforded tremendous intensity. Peppermint notes add lift, sawdusty oak adds spunk, and rivers of tannin set the wine on a firm course. Length is as confident as everything else about the wine. Indeed the momentum of quality here is quite something. Rating: 96

Amongst the 4 Shiraz we tasted the Gemtree Obsidian Shiraz 2012 is brilliant. This is the winery's flagship red and it is truly delicious. Very dark - almost black, jam packed with blackberry, plum, spicy oak yet smooth and downright delicious. It is now a complete package. Very impressive and for Shiraz fans - irresistible. Velvety and rounded and very satisfying. McLaren Vale at its best.

This is a gem of a wine. Deep, inky and vivid in colour, it has a complex nose with liquorice, ripe black fruits, mocha, black pepper and some savouriness. It has a rich, concentrated and delicious palate, with tobacco, violets and a hint of earthiness to add interest to its ripe black fruits. It has impeccable balance, with flavour, acid, tannins and alcohol all in sync. At $60, this is a steal and the best Aussie shiraz I'0ve tried in a long time. Rated: 5 stars

Very full, saturated black-red colour with youthful purple hues. The bouquet is refined and firmly concentrated with ripe blackberry and dark red berry fruits, entwined with spices, black pepper, lifted black and violet florals and exotic oak. Layers of toast and smoke unfold. The aromatics combine opulence with elegance. Full-bodied, the palate is rich and luscious with ripe black and red fruits complexed by layers of plums and liquorice, spices, florals tar and toasty oak. The concentrated fruit is supported fine-grained, powdery tannins forming a firm, weighty core with great presence, line and drive. The exotic fruit, violet floral, pepper and oak detail blossom, carrying through to a very long, nuanced finish. This is a rich, plush, concentrated Shiraz with weight, complexity and blossoming exotic detail. Match with roasted lamb, beef, venison and hard cheeses over the next 10-12+ years. 100% McLaren Vale Shiraz from the oldest estate vines, fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 36 months in new French oak barriques.
