Tasting Notes

We planted our first Tempranillo vineyard in McLaren Flat in 1999 on heavy clay soil. It was the first vineyard that we started farming bio-dynamically and it was also our first vineyard to achieve organic certification. This earlier ripening variety receives the Mike Brown treatment and delivers a luscious experience that suggests an alternative future for McLaren Vale ‘red’. Click here for the full biodynamic story behind our Tempranillo wines.

Heavy red purple with pink hue. The most vibrant vintage of Luna Roja to date.

Aromas of vibrant cherry, red liquorice, red berries, mulberry conserve and cola with a hint of spice and creaminess from the oak.

Food Pairings

Spanish chorizo paella or blood sausage.

The palate is medium weight and rich. The front palate shows purity and generosity while the mid palate is dominated by fruit. The tannins are complex, chalky and earthy hinting of the clay soil from where it came from. This wine is so Tempranillo!

100% Tempranillo - Sourced from our premium vineyards in McLaren Vale.

Winemaker's notes

Our Luna Roja vineyard is always harvested by hand on a fruit day as per our biodynamic philosophy. In 2016 we harvested on 10th February, which was a Fruit Day, at full flavour and tannin maturity. Fermentation occurred on skins for eight days with hand plunging only for soft tannin extraction. The wine was then pressed off skins with 50% going into new French oak puncheons and 50% into older French oak puncheons for aging in barrel on their original lees for extra texture. After 16 months in oak the wine was racked and bottled with no filtration or fining.
